Check the new loan balance as well as refinance break-even

Use break-even as an initial screen

Dividing relevant upfront refinancing costs by monthly payment reduction gives a simple cash-flow break-even estimate. For example, $3,000 divided by $150 is 20 months. This illustration assumes those figures stay constant and is not a loan offer.

Look beyond that one calculation

A new loan may restart or extend the repayment period, and costs rolled into the balance still have to be repaid. Compare remaining balances, interest and fees over the same time horizon. A payment reduction caused largely by stretching repayment can look attractive while costing more overall.

Match the comparison to your plans

Ask how long you expect to keep the loan, how much cash closing requires and what happens if you sell or refinance sooner. A short break-even estimate can be useful, but it does not by itself establish that the proposed loan meets your financial goal.

Is the lower monthly payment enough to prove savings?

No. The new balance, term, fees and expected holding period can change the answer.
