Start the comparison before you list

Ask what cash you need, when you need it and whether sale proceeds will arrive in time. A home equity loan or line may provide another route, but adds debt secured by the home. Review eligibility, fees, payments and the payoff plan. Access is not assured simply because an online estimate shows equity.

Include the retirement consequences

Withdrawing retirement money can involve income tax, additional tax and reduced funds for future growth, depending on the account and circumstances. An exception to an additional tax does not necessarily remove regular income tax. Compare alternatives with your lender and financial or tax adviser. Neither retirement withdrawals nor borrowing against the home is automatically the best answer.

Is using home equity always safer than retirement funds?

No. Borrowing creates repayment and collateral risks, while retirement withdrawals have their own costs. Evaluate both within the full plan.

Sources and scope

The April 2026 clip expresses a preference for preserving retirement assets. This companion treats that as a comparison to make, not a universal rule.
