YOUR MORTGAGE, EXPLAINED

Is home equity the same as net worth?

Home equity is one part of net worth. Net worth considers all assets minus all debts, while equity focuses on the home’s value minus secured debt. Neither number tells you how much cash is available for next month’s bills. Track accessible savings and monthly obligations alongside the broader balance sheet.

Build a complete picture

List cash, retirement accounts, other investments and property, then subtract all debts. Avoid counting the home’s full value as wealth without subtracting its mortgage and other liens.

Use cautious values

Home prices and investments can change. An online estimate is not a guaranteed sale amount, and selling can have costs. Keep uncertain estimates clearly labeled.

Separate accessible money

Retirement funds can have tax or access consequences, and home equity may require a sale or borrowing. A positive net worth does not automatically solve a short term cash shortage.

Choose the next priority

Your next dollar might build a reserve, reduce costly debt or support a longer term goal. Review the whole picture rather than maximizing one number on its own.
