YOUR MORTGAGE, EXPLAINED

Is my mortgage late if I pay during the grace period?

Your contractual due date, any late fee grace period and credit reporting treatment are different things. Read the loan documents and ask your servicer how each applies. Do not treat a grace period as a new due date or assume a payment scheduled at your bank has already reached the mortgage account.

Identify the actual due date

Use the statement and note rather than an online rule of thumb. Know when the servicer considers a payment received and which payment methods require processing time.

Separate the consequences

A fee deadline does not necessarily answer every question about account status or credit reporting. Ask specifically about your situation. General guidance cannot establish how an individual payment was reported.

Keep proof of receipt

Save confirmations and check the posted date. If you believe a payment was mishandled, contact the servicer with those records and ask about its error resolution process.

Fix the timing problem

If paydays repeatedly arrive after the due date, ask about available arrangements. Building a small payment buffer may help. Do not repeatedly rely on the last possible processing day.
