Understand what the percentage means

FICO identifies payment history as about 35% of its general score breakdown. That is a description of the scoring model, not a calculation in which one late bill automatically subtracts a fixed number of points. The influence of information can differ across credit profiles.

Make timely payments easier to maintain

Review due dates, minimum payments and available cash. Reminders or carefully monitored automatic payments can help prevent an overlooked bill. If an account is already past due, contact the creditor about the amount and options for bringing it current.

Avoid promises about the recovery timeline

The clip gives a possible point loss for a missed payment. No single range applies to everyone. FICO considers how overdue an account became, how recently it happened and other information. Continued timely payments may help, but they do not guarantee a particular score or mortgage approval date.

Can good payment history produce a perfect score by itself?

No. FICO also evaluates other credit information, including amounts owed and the history of accounts.
