YOUR MORTGAGE, EXPLAINED
Is mortgage protection insurance the same as PMI?
No. PMI generally protects the lender against certain losses if a borrower defaults. Products marketed as mortgage protection may involve life, disability or other coverage with different terms. Review who is insured, who receives benefits and what triggers payment. Do not assume an unsolicited insurance offer is required by your lender.

Identify the actual product
Ask for the policy type, insurer, benefit amount, exclusions and premium schedule. A mortgage themed name can obscure what is being sold. A licensed insurance professional should explain the contract.
Separate lender requirements
Required property insurance and any mortgage insurance are different from an optional personal protection product. Verify a claimed requirement with your lender through a trusted contact.
Compare your existing coverage
Consider how the proposed policy fits other life or disability coverage and household needs. Paying off a loan is only one possible financial need after a death or income loss.
Avoid an urgency decision
Marketing that references your loan amount may use public records. Take time to compare terms and suitability. Do not provide payment or identity information solely because a letter looks official.
